Dr. Mike Houts holds B.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida, as well as a Ph.D in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked 11 years with the Los Alamos National Laboratory serving in various positions including Team Leader for Criticality, Reactor, and Radiation Physics and Deputy Group Leader of the 70-person Nuclear Design and Risk Analysis Group. While at Los Alamos Dr. Houts also served as chairman of the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 25th Symposiums on Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion.
Dr. Houts will complete 24 years of service at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center prior to retiring later in 2025. Dr. Houts has served in various positions at NASA MSFC, including Nuclear Research Manager (responsible for guiding and technically advising research and development related to the design, development, and utilization of space nuclear propulsion and power systems) and Principal Investigator for Space Nuclear Propulsion. Awards for his work on advanced nuclear systems include a NASA Distinguished Service Medal and a NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal. Dr. Houts is also an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and served as program chair for the 2025 conference on Nuclear and Emerging Technologies for Space. Dr. Houts was a staunch evolutionist through his early twenties until he began to realize that true science strongly refutes atheism and other anti-God religions. Dr. Houts and his wife were baptized into Christ in 1999, and Mike currently serves as an auxiliary staff scientist for Apologetics Press.
