Discovery Bible Cards
The story of David and Goliath is fascinating. It is a historic tale of a young man who had the epic courage to trust in God for victory. When you read that story, you can’t help but wonder what Goliath looked like. Did the Sun reflect off his shield the day he fought David? Did he have matted, unkempt hair, or maybe a shaved head with something like a mohawk? And what about David? How old was he? What color was his hair and how long was it? Was he wiry and quick, or solid and strong, or maybe a little of both? The fact is, we can’t know, because the Bible doesn’t say. That doesn’t mean we can’t form a mental picture of what the stories might have been like in real life.

In Discovery, we have been teaching Bible stories for many years. We often illustrate them with pictures that help you, as the reader, get an idea of things like how tall Goliath was, what his armor may have looked like, or how the valley where he and David fought may have looked. We do this to help you remember the story. And we illustrate the stories to help “bring them to life,” so that you are reminded that these people really lived. Their stories are not fairytales or mere legend. They are history.
The Bible is filled with amazing men and women who did wonderful things. God chose to record their deeds to teach us about how to live and how to relate to our Creator. The Bible is also filled with liars, thieves, murderers, and villains. Their actions are recorded to show us what God doesn’t want us to do, and what happens to those who disobey Him.

At Apologetics Press, we believe that the stories and characters of the Bible are very important. God considers their lives important enough to record in the Bible. That means it must be good for us to know about them. We wanted to help people think about the characters and events in the Bible using life-like illustrations. We feel like these illustrations can offer a glimpse into how the men and women of the Bible may have looked, lived, and acted. Of course, we don’t know what they looked like. We don’t know if the flaming sword that guarded the Garden of Eden was curved or straight. The Bible doesn’t say. But we do know there was a sword, and a picture can help remind us of reality. In this issue of Discovery you will see a few of the 365 Discovery Bible Cards that we designed. We hope they help you learn about, and remember, the events in the Bible. And we hope they help you respect and appreciate God’s Word.

The Bible tells us that Josiah became king of Judah when he was eight years old. What would an eight-year-old king look like? Have you ever pictured Josiah in your mind? Perhaps he would have looked like this, and maybe this card can help you remember what the Bible tells us about him.

King Ahab was the most evil king in Israel’s history, and his wife, Jezebel was one of the most wicked women we read about in Scripture. What would they have looked like? Would their evil hearts be reflected in their appearance? Maybe this image can help you remember just how evil Ahab and Jezebel were.

When Lot’s wife turned back to look at Sodom, she was turned into a pillar of salt. What would this have looked like? Not only does this card help us remember the sin of Lot’s wife, but maybe it gives us an idea of what this image would have looked like when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God.

The moment when Queen Esther risked her life to approach the king is an important moment in the history of God’s people. This moment is captured in this image, showing the courage and beauty of Esther as she put her life on the line for her people. Can you imagine being there?

The Bible tells the remarkable account of when Elisha prayed that the eyes of his servant would be opened, revealing the “horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:17). This image gives us an idea of what that amazing moment may have looked like. What an incredible sight!

When the book of Revelation talks about “a woman clothed with the sun…and on her head a garland of twelve stars” and “a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads,” it can be hard to picture in our minds. Maybe this image will help.
We know that God is still active in this world. Even though His inspired Word is complete, He is still using ordinary people like you to accomplish amazing things. What if He recorded the events in your life for future generations to read and remember? What would be on your card? Would it say something like: Jordan, a loving friend who taught others about Jesus. He stood up for those who got picked on and made fun of. He was brave, kind, and was faithful to God his whole life. Or, Makayla, an intelligent girl who became a wife, mother, and medical researcher. She found a cure for one of the most deadly forms of cancer. She gave all the glory to God. She loved life in Christ and wanted as many people to experience it with her as possible.
Only you can determine what the card of your life would say.
Grow in your faith, serve others, and live a life that is pleasing to God!
